The Last Supper

Spoilers for Cole Magnus ahead.

You have been warned

Fun fact: whether put there intentionally by the author or not, every book has themes and motifs that foreshadow the plot.  The Fog Saga is no different.

Look at the books, as they currently stand, and as a story as a whole.  You may begin to notice a few recurring moments.  One such motif is the allegory of the Last Supper.  For those unfamiliar, the story can be found in Matthew 26: 17-30.  In Matthew chapter 26, Jesus knows he is mere hours from dying a horrible death on the cross.  Despite the impending danger, he takes his disciples aside, and they share the Passover meal together, which is a whole other category of foreshadowing for those who have also read Exodus 12.  As they eat, Jesus stands, prays, and offers them a piece of the same bread, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body” (verse 26).  Then Jesus offers up a glass of wine to his disciples, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.  This is my blood” (verse 27).  Jesus is predicting his death and predicting how the spilling of his blood will be “poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (verse 28).  He has to die, so his disciples, and the rest of the world, won’t have to die for their own wrongdoings.

Why is this important to The Fog Saga?  Because the allegory is in every single book.  Take Cole Magnus: nearing the end of the book, Saxe, Lyla, and Cole dine together and enjoy one peaceful meal together before the final battle begins.  Saxe, having seen a vision of this unfolding for years, knows exactly what will unfold.  He knows his death is certain.  But instead of telling Cole and Lyla or despairing, he shares a meal with them.  At this meal, he stands, lifts his glass, and makes a toast.  Saxe knows he will have to die so can Cole continue on his journey.  This mirrors the events of Matthew 26 as slyly as a wink.

So when you pick up the new Fog Saga book, keep an eye out for a meal, a toast, and a selfless character because they might just be about to give up everything for their friends.
