Meet Abby,
Abby is an 18-year-old superstar currently studying Pharmacy at Union University. In 2021, Abby’s world was flipped on her head. It was a Sunday afternoon, and she and her sister had stopped for milkshakes at Sonic after church, and then the world tilted. God had given Abby a hyper-aware mother, a caretaker, a provider, who was noticing some changes in Abby. When she got home that Sunday evening, her parents took her to a local doctor’s office. From that moment on, it was rush, rush, rush. First her hometown doctor, then to Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital. In a matter of hours, everything Abby knew was different. Her body was fighting itself, and there was nothing she had done wrong. In one hospital stay, Abby had to learn how to calculate carbs, give herself life-giving shots, listen when her body told her she was low, and change her entire life around this new diagnosis. She went back to middle school with a pen of insulin in her backpack and new robot parts on her arms. From the time she was thirteen, Abby has been up some nights to get the lifesaving nectar of a juice box or some M&Ms, only to have to wake up early the next morning and take the ACT, go to practice, and pretend life was normal.
Despite this uproar of changes, Abby has expressed that she wouldn’t change her lot in life. God has given her a platform, and she never fails to speak of His goodness in her situation. After all, “all things work together for the good of those that serve Him” (Romans 8:28).
But here’s the thing: there is still no cure. One in three hundred kids are diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, over eighteen thousand a year. God has given us brilliant scientists to create a cure for this disease, but we’re not quite there yet. Help show your support and spread awareness by wearing your Type 1 merchandise or by wearing the color blue on Fridays this November. Join us in the prayerful fight for a cure!
